Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 102 (11 August 2017)

Dear colleague

Here’s this week’s museum news bulletin….

  1. The next meeting of the SHARE Volunteer Coordinators Forum is at Gressenhall in Norfolk on 12 September. If you are interested please sign up at http://sharemuseumseast.org.uk/events/organising-teams-herding-cats-a-share-volunteer-coordinators-forum-event/.
  2. The deadline for submission of this year’s Benchmarking returns is 31 August which is ONLY TWO WEEKS FROM NOW, so if you have not already done so please ensure that your Museum’s details have been submitted as soon as possible. I know which museums have submitted and which are working on it, but there’s plenty in the County which haven’t started yet.
  3. The SWIM 2 project which is part funded by Museums in Cambridgeshire will be finishing in February 2018, so my thoughts are now turning to future projects of benefit to the County’s museums. Over the next few months I will be consulting MiC members to find out what MiC members see as the priorities for the next few years. This will help guide me as I approach potential funders in the knowledge that MiC is responding to the members’ needs. In the meantime if you have any strong views I would be delighted to hear from you.
  4. The Museum of Cambridge is currently advertising for a new Chair, closing date 24 August. For details please see https://jobs.theguardian.com/job/6555334/chair-of-trustees-museum-of-cambridge/.
  5. SHARE has launched the next programme in its excellent ‘Understanding Museums’ series, intended for people who have only recently entered the sector. If interested, please see http://sharemuseumseast.org.uk/events/understanding-museums-5-part-programme/.
  6. The Museum of Cambridge is advertising for a Project Assistant for the Tracing Traditions project, closing date 24 August. Details are at job no 49258 at http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/museumstudies/JobsDesk .
  7. A reminder that the closing date for applications to the Esmee Fairbairn Collections Fund at http://www.museumsassociation.org/collections/18022011-esmee-fairbairn-collections-fund is 6 September.

Best wishes

Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 101 (2 August 2017)

Dear colleague

Here is this week’s summary of Cambridgeshire museum news:

By far the most important development is the re-opening last weekend of the Norris Museum in St Ives, following their HLF-funded redevelopment. It was a privilege for me to be invited last Friday to see the impressive new displays and to watch an excellent film about the Museum and the redevelopment. May I suggest that, it you haven’t already visited, you do so as soon as you can? For details go to http://norrismuseum.org.uk/.

We also have great cause to celebrate that Ely Museum has almost reached its fundraising target for acquiring the fabulous Bronze Age torc from Cambridgeshire. For details see http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/local-news/british-museum-gold-torc-ely-13353495 .

The Cromwell Museum is advertising for an interim Curator, closing date 14 August (see attached details).

Kettle’s Yard is also recruiting staff. I am aware of advertisements for Assistant to the Director at
http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/14544/, Curatorial Assistant at http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/14493/ and Venue Hire and Events Coordinator at http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/14503/ closing dates 29 August, 23 August and 5 September respectively.

Finally I attach the latest regional newsletter of the British Association of Friends of Museums.

Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 100 (21 July 2017)

Dear colleague

Here is the rather brief and very belated 100th MiC news for Cambridgeshire museums:

1. Firstly, congratulations are due to the Museum of Classical Archaeology for achieving Full Accreditation.
2. Secondly, I have been informed that although it is early days there seems to be a low response rate for this benchmarking exercise, see http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/benchmarking1617 so please do make your return by 30 August. This is really important.
3. Burwell Museum has a new list of items for disposal (see attached). Interested contact the Museum or I can pass on your interest.
4. Museums with Islamic items in their collections might be interested in the opportunity at http://krc.orient.ox.ac.uk/iamcssn/index.php/en/funding
5. The Stained Glass Museum in Ely is advertising for a Learning Officer (maternity cover), closing date 15 September, at https://www.le.ac.uk/museumstudies/Jobs2/full_job_descriptions/49091.htm

Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 99 (30 June 2017)

Dear colleague

Firstly, I must congratulate Norfolk Museums Service and the University of Cambridge Museums on securing funding in the ACE National Portfolio from April 2018. This is tremendous news for both organisations, for Cambridgeshire’s museums and for the cultural life of the whole East of England, so well done to all concerned. Within the portfolio, SHARE Museums East, part of Norfolk Museums, will be a Sector Support Organisation to continue to deliver Museum Development.

I am also delighted to announce that the County Council will also be joining the Portfolio to deliver arts events and activities through ‘The Library Presents’ – this too can only be good for museums.

Other news this week:

1. There will be opportunities to input into the ACE Accreditation review (see http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/accreditation-scheme/about-accreditation#section-5) later in the year but in the meantime if museums want to raise points which are relevant for the review please email me or review.accreditation@artscouncil.org.uk.
2. Congratulations are due to Cambridge Museum of Technology, the Stained Glass Museum (Ely) and Peterborough Museum on being awarded SHARE Collections Care and Rationalisation grants. Well done!
