Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 43 (25 February 2016)

Here is this week’s MiC- relevant news…

  1. The Engage East Region has a meeting at Cambridge University Botanic Garden on the afternoon of 21 March, open to no-members for £5. Please contact catherinemummery@btinternet.com if you are interested.
  2. The Whipple Museum is advertising for a Learning Co-ordinator, closing date 22 March, at http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/9603/.
  3. The South and Museums Federation has a very interesting study day coming up at Bletchley Park on 10 March (see attached). Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 42 (18 February 2016)

I apologise for the long gap since MiC News 41, which has been due to me having a cold! Anyway here some items of news:

  1. SHARE have some undersubscribed courses which you may be interested in, both at Hollytrees in Colchester: Cutting Edge – Making Professional Labels & Panels- 3 March http://sharemuseumseast.org.uk/events/cutting-edge-making-professional-labels-panels/ Labelling & Marking Museum Objects– 8 March http://sharemuseumseast.org.uk/events/labelling-marking-museum-objects-6/.
  2. The National Trust have some items from Paycocke’s in Coggeshall to dispose of (see attached). If you are interested please contact Anna.Forrest@nationaltrust.org.uk.
  3. The 2016 SHARE Volunteer Awards are open for nominations. I urge you to encourage people to apply; this year there is a Learning Volunteer Award too. All the details can be found at www.sharemuseumseast.org.uk/volunteer-awards/. The closing date is 15th April. Judging will take place in May and the awards celebration will be at the Fitzwilliam on the evening of 9th June.
  4. Arts Council England (ACE) has commissioned CapeUK to carry out a review of formal learning in museums. If schools use your museum, please spare 20 minutes to complete a short survey by 29 February. You can find the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MuseumLearn3.
  5. UCM is currently advertising two new volunteer roles. Both are within the Marketing team and are focused on helping them to understand their visitors. They are ‘job’ numbers 43817-18 at http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/museumstudies/JobsDesk and the closing dates are 1st and 2nd March respectively.
  6. You may be interested in the ‘Creative Volunteering: beyond policy and procedure’ conference on 21 March at the Natural History Museum in London. Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 41 (5 February 2016)

Several interesting items this week:

  2. Museum Development Yorkshire have published some excellent new documents on copyright and related topics: check them out at http://tinyurl.com/zdowrfk.
  3. A Museum Studies student in Essex who is researching museum outreach has asked me to forward her survey in the hope that you may have time to fill it in: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/QM7B689.
  4. There is a conference in Cambridge on 14-15 March looking at the role of university museums in research: check it out at www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/events/26253.
  5. There is a training day on visual impairment accessibility in museums, led by Vision4Growth, 10am– 1pm on Monday 7th March at Hitchin British Schools Museum. To book your place contact Ella Brady at ella.brady@hertfordshire.gov.uk by 29 February 2016.
  6. There is also an Emergency Planning Training Day, led by Emma Dadson of Harwell’s 10.30am-3.30pm on Monday 14 March 2016 at the Military Intelligence Museum, Chicksands, Shefford. To book your place contact Ella Brady at ella.brady@hertfordshire.gov.uk by 29 February 2016. Please Note: This event will take place on an active military base and to enter the site you must undergo a security check. Therefore when booking your place please give Ella your full name, vehicle registration, vehicle make, vehicle model, vehicle colour and a valid passport number/ driving licence number, as this information must be supplied to the base in advance of your visit.

Museums in Cambridgeshire News no. 40 (29 January 2016)

There is the usual crop of interesting news this week:

 

  1. Please see the attached flyer for the promotion of Twilight at the Museums on 17 February.
  2. You might be interested in a collections skills seminar organised by the ACE and the Collections Trust at the Fitzwilliam Museum on 25 February; see Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum.
  3. Museum Development East Midlands are looking for someone to evaluate the impact of their small grants; see www.mdem.org.uk for details of the tendering process.
  4. As you no doubt know, 1 July will be the one hundredth anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Could you please let me know if you are planning to commemorate this terrible event.
  5. Can I remind any museum which promotes the history of Huntingdonshire that they can apply by 31 March for a Goodliff Award? For details contact the Administrator at goodliff.awards@gmail.com.
  6. There’s quite a lot happening at the moment:

  3. The Oxford University Museum of Natural History is recruiting a Project Assistant for their Off-Site Collections Move Project for a 12 month post. Please see the OUMNH website for further details and the application: http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/about/vacancy.htm.
  4. There may be a few places left for some training in Essex on 25 January will be led by improvisational comedy troop “Do Not Adjust Your Stage”. http://essexmdo.com/events/improvyourmuseum/. I have it on good authority that this will be excellent!
