  • The British Museum is recruiting a Head of National Programmes, closing date 13 October.
  • HLF is advertising for a Grants Officer in Cambridge, closing date 11 October.
  • SHARE have some great SHARE training opportunities in Cambridgeshire over the next few months: at Ely there is ‘point and shoot’ on 6 October; ‘co-production’ on 14 October; at the HLF offices there is ‘Young Roots’ on 19 October; at Prickwillow there is Heritage Engineering Network on 9 November. There is also the Conference at Ickworth on 16 November and the Front of House Forum in Norwich (SCVA) on 19 October.
  • My colleague Amy Cotterill is recruiting a freelance project co-ordinator and an evaluator for a peer-mentoring project for learning staff in Essex museums, closing date 11 October.

May I also draw your attention to the MA’s Annual Cuts Survey, which was published last week. This is a really key bit of research for the sector and will help to provide evidence on how different parts of the sector are faring in an era of reduced public funding. I would be very grateful if you could take the time to fill in the survey before the 30th September deadline.

  1. The Museum of Cambridge is advertising for an Administration and Finance Officer, closing date 20 September.
  2. The Fitzwilliam Museum is advertising for a Digital Communications Assistant, closing date 11 October.
  3. The Fitzwilliam Museum is advertising for a Research Assistant, Applied Arts, closing date 29 September.
  4. You might like to take a look at www.google.com/culturalinstitute/home which could be useful for museums.
  5. The Archaeology of Childhood Project has announce a second Consultation Panel, which will be held at the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology (MAA) on Monday, 21 September at 6.30pm. They welcome any interested individuals or groups to attend to help shape the forthcoming exhibition, which is a collaborative effort between MAA and the Cambridgeshire County Council’s Historic Environment Team. The team will present the artefacts shortlisted for the exhibition and will then focus discussion on potential exhibition themes. The session will last approximately 1 hour and tea and biscuits will be provided. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to archildhood@maa.cam.ac.uk.   6. The MiC AGM was held at Peterborough Museum on 14 September and was very successful. The next meeting will probably be at St Neots in December.
  7. I have information about travel grants of up to £2,000 to help museums who want to work internationally. Rather than send you all the details here, please contact me if you might be interested and I will pass them on to you. The deadline will be 30 October.

Museums in Cambridgeshire News 26 (8 September 2015)

Regular round-up of news for Museums in Cambridgeshire from Gordon Chancellor, Museums Partnership Officer.

This week I am pleased to announce this year’s allocation of small grants. Please see the attached application form and guidance document. You may notice that this year the maximum size of grant is £1,000 and the timetable is a little earlier than it has been in recent years, with a deadline for applications of 30 October.

I can also report that HLF are recruiting for a new Chair and Member on the East of England Committee with roles starting in April 2016. The closing date for applications is Monday 28 September 2015. Finally, Mike Latchem’s funeral (see MiC news 24) is on Tuesday 22 September at 12:30 at March Crematorium.  The wake will be held at Ramsey Rural Museum from 2pm. No flowers but donations to the Museum.

Museums in Cambridgeshire News 24 (4 September 2015)

There’s plenty of news this week:

  1. The SHARE training calendar 2015-2016 is as brilliant as ever and is ready for booking. It is also available as a pdf.
  2. The South and East Museums Federation (SEMF) has a study day on 9 October at Saffron Walden, which is available at the members’ rate for anyone not yet a member who is studying for their AMA.
  3. SEMF is also running a study tour to Rome and is inviting applications for a Martin Howe bursary. The bursary this year is open to any members of SEMF who are relatively new to the museum world, and who would like to join in with the study trip to Rome 27-30 January 2016. Further information on the trip will be sent out to members and at the end of August.
  • A condition of the bursary is that recipients submit a report on the trip to be published on the SEMF website and further afield.

To apply for the bursary:

  • You need to be a member of SEMF.
  • Send a letter of application to SEMF telling them about yourself, your current role in museums, and why you want to go on the trip, by 30 September.
  • Content of application to be a maximum of 500 words.
  • Please email this letter to sally@ackroyd.org.uk.  SEMF will acknowledge receipt of all applications.

SEMF will contact all applicants re the committee’s decision by 14 October. The deadline to reserve your place on the trip will be 31st October. The value of the bursary is £200, to be paid on receipt of the recipient’s report on return from the trip.

  1. HLF is advertising for a Head of Operations Management and also for a Team Assistant for the Cambridge Office.
  2. Culture24 has made some changes to the way it administers Museums at Night: they have created a basic form explaining the four key things their team will do for participating organisations, and what they expect museums to do in return.
  3. Culture24 is also currently focussing on ceramics collections and how to promote them via social media channels, including Pinterest. If your museum has a ceramics collection and would like to promote it, please contact Culture24 editor Richard Moss on 01273 523987, or email richard@culture24.org.uk.

Firstly, I must mention sadly that Mike Latchem passed away on Thursday. Like me, many will have known Mike in recent years as President of Ramsey Rural Museum. I will if appropriate pass on details of Mike’s funeral.

Secondly, please find attached details of the Development Assistant sought by The Fitzwilliam Museum, closing date 14 September.

Last but not least, congratulations to the Farmland Museum on achieving Full Accreditation.
